Common Causes & Prevention

If you are experiencing drainage problems, we can help. While we offer solutions to fix any problems, we also want to help prevent these from recurring again. Common issues we face include:

Hair

Every time we wash or brush our hair, strands are extracted. In fact, the average person loses between 50 and 100 strands of hair every day. You won’t see most of those hairs and they could be all over your house, clothes, car and so on. But many of those hairs end up in your sink, shower or bath drains and if not cleared, they can enter the pipes, gather at a bend and cause a blockage. Try to clean the hair before it goes into the drain.

Nappies, Wipes, Sanitary Products

You might be surprised at how many call-outs we receive for blocked toilets, only to find the homeowner has been flushing sanitary products, baby wipes, and yes – even nappies, down the drain. Toilets are not designed for these products as they don’t break up (like toilet paper does). When these products are wet, they actually absorb the moisture and get bigger, which is guaranteed to block your drains. Keep a bin next to your toilet instead, and if you need help to clear a mess, give us a call.

Grease and Oil

Particularly prevalent in the kitchen or workshop, grease and oil can build up in your drains and pipes, sticking to the sides as you wash it away. As you wash other debris and food down the drain, it can in turn stick to the grease, causing a blockage. You can prevent this by discarding oil and grease in the garbage instead.

Trees, Dirt & Debris

Trees, dirt and leaves are common causes for blocked drains outside the home, particularly on the roof. Bird’s nests and feathers, mice and possums, and faeces from animals can also cause problems; and on the ground, tree roots generally grow towards drains for a source of water, which can also cause blockages (and structural damage). It’s especially important before, during, and after storm season that you have a professional tend to your water drains and pipes to ensure water is flowing through these correctly.

Problems With Pipes

Your pipes are susceptible to a range of problems, including general wear and tear. If your pipes have cracks or fractures, they’re more likely to experience blockages. If they have been poorly installed in the first place (i.e. through DIY or anyone who isn’t a qualified plumber), this can also create problems. Poor installation and cracks hinder the flow of water to your home. It can result in leaks, which can be dangerous to the foundations, the land and your health (as it can lead to mould). At the first sign of any problems, call in a professional. Blocked drains can also be caused by soap residue, food build-up, children’s toys and garden waste. If you suspect you have a blocked drain and need assistance to clear it, we can help.
